Leadership & Grassroots Politics — Shree. Sanjay Upadhyay on Ek Soch

From a Parle factory worker's son to Borivali MLA, Sanjay Upadhyay shares his journey of discipline, leadership, and politics on Ek Soch Podcast.

Mumbai: Political journeys often begin with grand campaigns and large rallies. But for Sanjay Upadhyay, the path to leadership started with something far simpler — a college election decided by a coin toss.

In a recent conversation on the Ek Soch Podcast, Upadhyay reflected on his journey from growing up in a modest household in Parle to becoming the Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Borivali, one of Mumbai's most politically significant constituencies.

"The episode explores not only his political rise but also the mindset, discipline, and leadership principles that shaped his journey."

Growing Up in a Worker's Household

Upadhyay's early life was rooted in simplicity and discipline. His father worked at the Parle Glucose factory and was actively involved in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

Instead of learning politics through textbooks or television debates, Upadhyay's introduction to public life came through grassroots exposure — watching his father attend RSS shakhas and listening to speeches by leaders such as Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

"These experiences shaped his early understanding of politics as discipline and service rather than power."

The Coin Toss That Changed Everything

Upadhyay's first step into electoral politics came during a college union election. Despite resistance from people around him who questioned the risks involved, he decided to contest.

The election eventually ended in a tie.

"The winner was determined by a coin toss — and Upadhyay won."

While the moment may appear symbolic, it represents a deeper principle he discussed during the podcast: leadership often begins by stepping into uncertain situations without guaranteed outcomes.

For many aspiring leaders, he suggested, the first challenge is not winning but simply having the courage to participate.

Building Influence Before Seeking Power

Before becoming a prominent political leader in Mumbai, Upadhyay spent years working within the organisational structure of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

His early roles included:

  • Ward President
  • Member of BJP Yuva Morcha leadership
  • Youngest General Secretary of BJP Mumbai

Rather than focusing on titles, he emphasised organisational work and grassroots engagement. According to Upadhyay, this phase was crucial in building trust among senior leaders and party workers.

Leaders such as Gopinath Munde and Devendra Fadnavis noticed his consistent work during these early years.

The "Borivali Pattern" of Governance

Today, Borivali has emerged as an example frequently discussed in local governance debates.

During the podcast, Upadhyay described several initiatives that have shaped the constituency's development.

Tackling Illegal Hawking

One of his most talked-about initiatives involved removing illegal hawkers around Borivali railway station. The action sparked strong resistance and even resulted in a physical attack by a mob of hawkers.

However, the initiative eventually led to a cleaner and more organised station area.

Infrastructure Improvements

Under his leadership, many roads in Borivali have been reconstructed, with additional phases of concrete road development planned.

While infrastructure upgrades may appear routine, residents often view them as major improvements to daily life.

Addressing Security Concerns

Upadhyay has also spoken publicly about issues such as drug networks in the Dahisar–Borivali belt and illegal immigration, framing them as matters of safety for local residents.

A Simpler Approach to Public Life

In a city known for its fast-paced lifestyle and political visibility, Upadhyay describes himself as someone influenced by the minimalist values of the RSS.

During the discussion, he highlighted several personal principles:

  • Politics should be service rather than lifestyle
  • Maintaining a simple and disciplined life
  • Staying accessible to citizens

He also noted that he personally answers many calls and messages rather than routing them through assistants.

Youth, Women and the Future of Politics

Beyond local issues, the conversation also explored broader themes.

Upadhyay believes that more educated and committed individuals should enter public life, especially young professionals.

He emphasised the importance of skill development programs to help youth find employment and supported the idea of greater representation of women in legislative bodies.

These steps, he said, can strengthen democratic participation and improve governance.

Environmental Initiatives in Borivali

Environmental sustainability was another theme discussed during the podcast.

Upadhyay highlighted local tree plantation drives aligned with the national Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam initiative, which encourages citizens to plant trees in honour of their mothers.

Such initiatives, he said, are part of a broader effort to improve urban living conditions in Mumbai.

Leadership Lessons from the Journey

While the conversation focused on Upadhyay's political journey, it also offered broader leadership insights:

  • Begin with small opportunities
  • Accept uncertainty in early decisions
  • Focus on building trust before seeking recognition
  • Stay committed to a few clear causes
  • Maintain accessibility and accountability

These principles, according to the podcast host, apply beyond politics to leadership in any field.
